Shanghai
High School (SHS) is a leading, state-owned boarding and
day Demonstration high school. It was established in 1865
and was originally known as Longmen Shu Yuan. The beautifully
designed campus is located on 56 attractively landscaped
acres (230,000 square |
meters). Currently, SHS has 3,000 Chinese and foreign
students divided into 94 classes. Over one half the student
body (1,800) consists of international students from 57 different
countries or regions.
SHS is well known for its rigorous
management system and outstanding quality of education. It
has a long history of nurturing China's best and brightest
students. Its famous alumni include Chinese Vice President
Zeng Qinghong and over 100 provincial and state leaders, 51
academicians of the Academy of Sciences and Academy of Engineering,
and 29 military generals.
SHS has a country-wide reputation for being an ¡°incubator
for top-rated universities.¡± The acceptance rate for local
Chinese graduates into domestic key universities is over
95% (98.9% in 2006). Over 60% of the Chinese graduates entered
famous Beijing University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University
and Jiao Tong University. For the graduates of International
Division, over 85% of the candidates have been accepted
by Chinese key universities such as Tsinghua University
and Beijing University. About 90% have passed ¡°The Joint
Entrance Exam for Students from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macao
and Overseas Chinese¡±. Over 75% have been accepted by prestigious
universities in America and European countries. Of the students
who applied to U.S. universities, about one-third of them
were admitted into top twenty universities. Approximately
90% of IB students have earned the IB diploma. Those who
took SAT(I and II) Tests got full marks several times. Many
of our graduates have entered world-famous universities,
such as Harvard University,Johns Hopkins University, Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, University of Toronto, Waseda University,
and Paris Conservatoire.
SHS has persistently pursued the principle
of ¡°optimhsticallx educating elite students¡± while at the
same time adapting to new educational methods and technologies.
The concept of ¡°Excellent student moral education¡± was first
raised and practised in SHS. SHS has established its international
recognition by becoming the first Chinese school to join the
International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) in Shanghai,
and it is the only Chinese member school of UNESCO ASPnet
in Shanghai. It has also established partnerships with more
than ten well-known British, American, French, German, Canadian
and Japanese high schools. SHS has been digitalized and updated
with the latest educational technology; for example, the campus
has a station network, as well as a wireless network and an
MP network. The school has 4 types of 18 modern, digitalized
labs which provide up-to-date access to engineering, therapy
consulting, digital music and art technologies.
In recent years, our Chinese students
have won 24 gold and 9 silver medals in the International
Math Olympics competition and the International School Sports
Federation (IFS) Table Tennis Championship. In the past four
years, SHS students have won more than 2000 medals from a
variety of competitions locally in district and Shanghai,
across China, and around the world; including the Intel ISEF
Awards, the Chinese Youth Technology Awards and the First
Prize of All China High School Student Creation Competition
(The Future Cup Competition) among others. |
